Charlie Bax – Artisan Bone Ware for the Home

Charlie Bax-Artisan Bone Ware for the Home

I have found such unique, inspiring and innovative products on Instagram.   I recently discovered yet another find called Charlie Bax artisan bone ware.  This small, artisanal product line was inspired by a pure love, and slightly offbeat passion for up-cycling animal bone – cow femurs in particular.

The femur bones are locally sourced from Jim’s Fallbrook Market in Woodland Hills, CA.   The bones, Heather Crowe, the owner and fonder of the company, purchases are then re-used and then turned into lovely smelling, and aesthetically beautiful candles.    In true up-cycled fashion, nothing from these bones goes unused.   The marrow from the femur bones is extracted and baked into dog treats.  These doggie treats are then donated to the Soledad Goat Sanctuary, a no kill animal rescue farm that houses 10 to 20 rescued dogs on their property.

Although the femur bones are purchased raw from a butcher who cuts them up and sizes them, the marrow from the bone is extracted and then re-used.   The broth from the bone is saved and boiled in to a drink.  Bone broth is rich in minerals that support the immune system, and contains healing compounds such as; collagen, glutamine, glycine, and proline.

There are other health benefits to drinking the bone broth:

Protects joints, supports the immune system, helps in supporting stronger bones, the phosphorus, magnesium and calcium seeps out into the broth leaving you with essential building blocks for healthier bones.  (info taken from Shape Magazine, article on 8 Reasons to try Bone Broth)

What I love about Charlie Bax is the unique way, they have figured out a way to up-cycle a usable resource, cow femurs, into an aesthetically beautiful, and stylish product into multiple uses such as; candle stick holders, tea lights and votives.

These aromatic candles are infused with scents like, lemongrass, patchouli, oil of sage, geranium, lavender, ginger, cedar wood, red currant, rose and ginger.

I tried the Siren Splendor Mean Bone Candle, pictured here.   The fragrance is sassy and spicy with undertones of musk.   Including essential oils of sage, lavender, ginger, cedar wood, germanium and patchouli.  The candle smells divine and is such a unique and soothing scent.  I keep it on the night stand next to my bed, the scent is so calming.
